Before our Abbotsford electricians recommend any back-up power supply products to our customers we look for the following
in the available brand name generators for sale. They must be:
They also have to have good alternators and reliable engines that have a reputation for performance that lasts.
There are three brands we recommend most as part of our generator sales and service
including Generac, Honda, and Yamaha generators.
Generac Generators
As a backup standby generator, Generac has developed an excellent reputation. A Generac generator is a permanent installation designed to provide immediate back-up power in the event that your power goes out. You have a choice between a smaller, lower-priced, air-cooled Generac generator (for powering only essential circuits) or a larger, liquid-cooled Generac generator designed to power your entire home or business. Our Our generator electrician will install your generac generator with a transfer switch that automatically takes your home or business off of BC Hydro’s power grid before safely powering up the Generac generator. Once power is restored to your area the transfer switch turns off the Generac generator and restores your connection with BC Hydro’s power grid.
Honda Generators
Why do we recommend a Honda generator as part of our generator sales and service? Besides the fact that the Honda name has an excellent reputation for superior quality, Honda generators are portable, built to last, and run forever. This is important if you will be running your portable generator regularly. Portable Honda generators are also fairly easy to start, including a “low oil auto-stop” feature, and generally run quieter than other brand name generators. If you live in a rural area and noise isn’t an issue that’s okay. However, for those who live in suburban areas, we recommend buying a quieter Honda generator. You also have a choice between a fixed speed Honda generator and a Honda inverter generator, which is designed to run slower when there’s no load or just a light load. As with anything, you get what you pay for and Honda generators are definitely worth the price.
Yamaha Generators
Your generator electrician will consider many factors when installing a Yamaha generator including:
Yamaha generators are very popular so there are many different models of available for sale. We can help you calculate your wattage usage and choose the best portable or stationary Yamaha generator for your application.
Premium Electric recommends that you always hire a professional generator electrician to assess your load needs and to install and service a backup generator for your home or business.

Generator FAQs
How do I determine the right generator size for my home or business?
The size of generator will depend on your electrical needs. List all the critical appliances such as refrigerators, heating systems, lighting, and medical equipment. Add their wattage requirements to calculate the total load. A small generator between 5,000 and 8,000 watts is enough to accommodate the essential electrical needs of the average home. 10,000 watts or higher will be necessary if you are looking for a whole house generator for home or business. Call Premium Electric at 604-308-6195 and our licensed electrician can perform a detailed load analysis to recommend an appropriately sized generator.
Is it legal to connect a portable generator directly to my home’s electrical system?
It is illegal and hazardous to make a direct connection without a transfer switch. Doing so violates BC Electrical Code and may affect your home insurance. Contact our qualified electricians for a consultation. We can install a generator transfer switch, ensuring safe operation and compliance with regulations.
How much does it cost to install a generator?
Generators for home and business vary in size and output and can cost anywhere from $500 up to $10,000 or more. There is also a cost to hire a qualified electrician to properly install your generator and transfer switch.
How do I choose between a portable and a standby generator?
Portable generators are cost-effective and suitable for short-term power needs. Standby whole house generators provide automatic power during outages and are ideal for homes or businesses requiring continuous power. Contact Premium Electric for help assessing your power needs, budget, and installation requirements.
How can I prevent carbon monoxide poisoning when using a portable generator?
Always operate generators outdoors, away from windows, doors, and vents. Never run a generator in an enclosed space, including garages, even if doors are open. Install a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector as an added safety measure.
Are there incentives or rebates available for installing a backup generator in BC?
Currently, there are no provincial rebates for backup generator installations. However, some municipalities may offer incentives for energy-efficient upgrades. Check with local authorities for any available programs. Visit the BC Hydro Rebates page for current home renovation rebates.
How often should a home generator be serviced?
Regular maintenance is always recommended annually or after a minimum of 200 hours run time. Each individual manufacturer may have different minimum requirements depending on make or model.
How often should I run my portable generator to maintain its performance?
Most manufacturers recommend that you test your generator regularly and run your generator without a load at least once a month.
What are the benefits of a manual transfer switch versus an automatic one?
Manual transfer switches require manual operation during power outages, offering cost savings. Automatic transfer switches detect power loss and switch to generator power without user intervention, providing convenience and continuous power supply.
