Electrical Emergency Procedures

Here are a few general guidelines about what you should do in the event of an emergency and you need an out of hours electrician:

Electrical Fire

Water conducts electricity so never pour water on an electrical fire; use ABC fire extinguisher only. If possible, disconnect the power source and immediately call our 24 hour electrician.

Electrical Shock

If possible, immediately disconnect or turn off the power source and contact our emergency electrician. If someone has been injured, call for emergency medical services ASAP and provide first aid to the victim.

Electrical Power lines

Always keep a safe distance (at least 10 meters) between you and any downed power lines. Remain inside your vehicle and call our emergency electrician if a live downed power line should fall across your vehicle.

Electrical Emergency FAQ’s

What is considered an electrical emergency?

An electrical emergency can be anything electrical that poses a risk to the safety of your home and family and may include exposed electrical wiring, electric shock, breakers that keep tripping, or electrical fires, smoke, or the smell of burning wires. A power outage is not an electrical emergency.

What should you do in an electrical emergency?

Do not try to address the electrical emergency yourself. Always call a qualified electrician regardless of the day or time. Most electricians offer 24-hr emergency electrical services.

Whats the going rate for a 24h emergency electrician?

When you hire an electrician, generally, there are two fees, a flat service call fee plus an hourly rate (usually between $50 and $100 or more per hour).

Who to call for an electrical emergency?

For an electrical emergency call your local electrician. For a power outage in BC, call BC Hydro (1-800-224-9376).
